Long Exposure Noise
      
      The following are 100% zooms of the central image area of shots from a
      Nikon D700 with lens cap on; ISO100, no noise reduction.  Exposure
      times are: 1/2 a second, 30 seconds, 60 seconds, 120 seconds, 300 seconds
      and 600 seconds.   Unsurprisingly, random noise gets progressively worse as
      exposure time lengthens; 'hot pixels' are always in the same place, more
      appear as exposure time lengthens. 
      For best reproduction, adjust your monitor so that you can resolve all
      26 levels in the gray scale:
